Feel INDIAN DISH of a great savor by JaYoung Son

When I talked about food with my host family at the first time, everyone considered Indian food their favorite food. Also, they all wanted to make me try Indian food. Especially Kim, a mother of the host family said that she would buy me some Indian food if I would want. When I heard of it, I thought about Native American Indians. Therefore I expected to eat wild vegetables and just simply-cooked meat. Yet, it was actually Indian food in Asia.

Last Friday, there was a classical music concert that is a sort of summer festival in school. Before the concert started, Kim chose Indian food for everybody’s outdoor dinner picnic. I agreed with her idea because I haven’t been to a restaurant specializing in Indian food. Even though some kinds of Indian dishes such as curry with rice or chicken are familiar to me and also my mother can cook curry with rice, I have not eaten other Indian sauce and special Indian bread. Therefore, I wished to try something new and exotic.

Kim and I went buying some food for other family members. Kim tried to introduce a trailer to me, in which Indian people sell a wide variety of Indian dishes. It was her best trailer which she visits on a regular basis. Also, their food was said to be relatively cheaper than other restaurants’. However, unfortunately, they closed their trailer at that time. It was inevitable to buy take-out Indian food at another near restaurant.

We bought some take-out Indian food and all family gathered at an outdoor table of school. When I opened curry, it smelled so nice that I couldn’t describe my emotion in words. Different from Korean curry, Indian curry contained more other various ingredients such as cheese, beans, fruits, and so on. Moreover, there were many different curry and sauce which are fabulous when eaten with rice and bread. I also ate fried potatoes which were garnished with curry sauce. It was so yummy that everyone ate it at once.

Every Indian food  suited my taste and even I felt lucky and thankful that Kim let me experience Indian food. This may be because Korea and India has shared similar Asian culture basis and exchanged their culture a lot for the long term. When I come back to Korea a few weeks later, I’ll let my parents and brother taste Indian dishes, stimulate their appetite, and feel a characteristic flavor of Indian food. I can recommend Indian food to any Korean people with confidence.

I enjoyed reading your article about Indian food. I often go to Indian restaurants here in the U.S. Many Indian restaurants have buffets at lunchtime where you pay one price and can try many dishes. It’s economical and delicious!
