When people think of American food the first foods to come mind often are – hamburgers, hotdogs, and apple pie. But what about the foods of the first true Americans–the Native Americans? Of course the type of food grown and consumed by Native American peoples varied across the country and was often very localized.
Some of the Native American foods that I’m familiar with include:
CORN, BEANS, & SQUASH: 3 food staples that were domesticated, then grown and harvested by various tribes across North America. Different tribes used and ate different varieties of corn, beans and squash in different ways.
SALMON FISH: A staple of the Native Peoples in the Pacific Northwest.
HUCKLEBERRIES: A staple of many Native American tribes in the Pacific Northwest
